I originally started this practice with a different horse and I was taking the Tums and he wanted some. Turns out horses find Tums really yummy and they don’t have any sugar in them, at least the generic ones that I purchase. I’m always careful to just use mint Tums when I’m out of show or at a clinic otherwise the fruity kind will give your horse pink froth. But anyways I find this as a nice way to give my horse a quick treat before riding or trailering. I’ve often wondered how many times it would take to actually provide some acid relief, knowing that it would be relatively temporary. Do you have any thoughts on this? Because my horse is Ulcer prone I do all sorts of things too mitigate that. One other thing I do if she’s going to be away is that I’ll give a pellet meal with sucralfate and some magnesium oxide. Again hoping that the two will have a coating and neutralization effect on the stomach acid.
